Memorial Day with family

Memorial Day is an occasion to celebrate, remember, and spend time with family. Since our clan now includes several very active youngsters (my nephews), this means getting outside as much as possible.

Levi (above), who is obsessed with all things nature, found an abandoned birds' nest. He was extremely excited, and quickly found a snail in his shell, inching up the side of the house, to place inside.

Caleb, on the other hand, was extremely eager to show off his books and school things to his Great-Grandma. As of this past week he completed kindergarten at the local public school. This was his, and our, first foray into educating the next branch of our family, and it felt like a very big deal! It seems like just yesterday that I was staring at him in his hospital bassinet, completely smitten with this new little human being who had entered the world and our family. Now he's so full of unique expressions, smart, and very much his own person already.

Grandma, at age 95, is still doing amazingly well, but gets a bit flustered and overwhelmed by the noise and intensity that comes along with three boys under the age of 6. She is a big reader, so sitting down with Caleb and going through his books with him suited her just fine. It makes me so happy to see the bond they have with her: in all likelihood she won't be around to enjoy their growing up years, so this time is very special.
